I’m going to have to try that. I makes sense because he doesn’t have anything to keep himself up. The pulling the guy on top of you is a great idea too.

Awesome variation on the arm drag. I’ll be back on the mat next week, and this is coming with me. Keep it the good work.
June 24th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Simple but… oh so effective…. I like it… I got BJJ practice tonight… I plan on trying both versions at some point…
June 24th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
These are two good ones. I’ll use it at Judo parctice.

Paul, your style and personality make learning these moves really fun. I also go “duh”, because I can’t believe what you show is there all the time and I don’t see it til you show it. If I were rich, this 56 yr. old grappler would have you as my personal coach. Hope you never get tired of teaching, God gave you a very special gift!

Ye gods, I’m foaming at the mouth to try the collar drag! Nice stuff, keep ‘em coming!! I definitely need to stop by at your next seminar. Big shout from Philly!

This is really awesome stuff, young man. I really love taking the back. To me, it’s the cleanest way to end a fight. No blood if you’re fighting MMA, no uncomfortable armbars that can put you in a compromising position in BJJ. And the worst thing that can happen if he doesn’t tap, they pass out. I love taking the back and putting on a RNC. Nice job, Paul. Thanks for the tips and keep ‘em coming!

Great breakdown, I’ve worked these drags some, but you make it look so sneaky I will start trying to seriously take them when opportunities present themselves more, Nice work!
June 24th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Great information! Very simple—I’ll be trying it the next time I am on the mat.
June 24th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
paul i appreciate your style very much. your an excellent coach. you are very articulate and the way you break things down makes them very easy to understand. as a blue belt and an og i am constantly struggling against the stronger younger more experienced guys… it is for this reason that i am a huge advocate of a good sound defense. again thank you.

Wonderful. Renews my desire to start on my backside while while opponent is on his knees. Thank you for keeping the instruction light and informative!

Hey Professor Paul,
This is the kind of technique that all of us O.G’s really need now, because we are at an age, and a stage in our life where by we need to try grapple smarter, and definately not harder.
If you look at the statistics now, there are more O.G.’s out there training in the BJJ than there is younger grapplers, and thats because we are trying to use our grappling training for fitness, well being, and for self defense.
Now us O.G.’s know that its definately more about training smarter and not harder, so if we combine this mind set with all your fantastic techniques on the mat, it will certainly make the big difference that we are all looking for now, especially when we grapple with an egotistical ‘young punk’, eh Bro!

The arm drag is one of my favorite and most effective moves from standing, knees and guard. I am more experienced in wrestling/grappling and relatively new to gi BJJ. The collar drag is simple, interesting and going to be added to my arsenal…I love it!
June 24th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
Awesome!
June 24th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Great OG defense! Immediately useful techniques that I will definitely work on going forward. “Defense wins championships”!
June 24th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Paul, as a former wrestler I use the technique a lot and have been using it from both the arm and collar. As I have found with many BJJ techniques it is often the situational application more so than the technique itself that is important. Your parenthesis explanation was a light bulb moment for me. I instantly knew that if I do things to ensure my opponent is committing both hands my percentage of success should increase. As a former wrestler I have always focused on the arm I’m trying to drag. I will now try to bait my opponent to commit two grips before I utilize this technique and see if my success percentage increases. Thanks

Nice addition.
If old guys can’t be super-athletes at least they can be crafty.

I have never seen the technique using the cross collar grip. That was great. I am going to apply this tomorrow. Thanks!
June 25th, 2009 at 2:59 am
Simple and effective using what the opponent gives you.
Efficient jiu jitsu right there!

Yet another fantastic video that will most definitely improve my game! Thanks alot. All your techniques are so simple and easy to apply yet they are so effective you have no idea until you try them! My theory is, if you have an excellent defense you cannot be beaten, and if you cannot be beaten then only victory stare you in the face..Its refreshing to see someone that teaches defensive and offensive strategies because so many instructors overlook the defense part of BJJ.

great video. I’ve been looking at incorporating arm drags into my game more. This shows a good thing to “key” on when looking for them. Thank you.

This is a great tip. Very easy to do but offten over looked or not used at all. I tryed it on the mat last night and it worked! Im 36 years old and in great shape but i dont like the young tuff guy attitude. It was great to take all 4 of their backs ! All they do is offence and never work on defence. Im the old guy that uses defence to create my offence so im not the cool guy.Needless to say they had to give up some respect to the old guy!
Thanks paul !
June 25th, 2009 at 8:00 am
Don’t think many would see that one coming! I’ll give it a go
June 25th, 2009 at 10:04 am

June 25th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Looks good. Eager to try it when I get back to the gym.
June 25th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Looks nice. I’m going to try it in my class tomorrow.
June 25th, 2009 at 7:47 pm
A “must know”, better said a “must master” this is one of the techniques that works against those roided giants who push you out of side control easyly.
June 25th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Good stuff! Very practical!

Sometimes it’s really that simple, isn’t it? I feel a little stupid for not thinking of this myself/earlier, though.
